Hotel and Guesthouse Websites: Get More Direct Bookings

Hotel website direct bookings cover

Many hotels and guesthouses get most of their guests from booking platforms. Those platforms bring visitors, but they also take a commission on each stay and they own the guest relationship. A good website gives you another way to fill rooms, and you keep the full price and the guest’s contact details.

This guide covers what a hotel or guesthouse website needs to win direct bookings. It works for a ten room guesthouse and for a larger hotel.

Why direct bookings matter

  • You do not pay a platform commission on a direct stay.
  • You know who your guests are and can welcome them back.
  • You set your own rules on cancellations, extras and offers.
  • You control how your property looks and what is said about it.

You do not need to leave the platforms. Use them to be found, and use your website to turn repeat guests and local referrals into direct bookings.

What a guest wants from your site

A traveller compares a few properties in a few minutes, usually on a phone. They want to see the rooms, the price, the location and a simple way to book. If any of these is missing, they go to a platform where it is all in one place.

The booking funnel

Think of the guest’s path as five steps. Make each step easy.

Step Guest thinks Your site provides
Find Where can I stay? A Google Business Profile and a clear search listing
Look Does it look clean and safe? Real photos of every room type
Check Is it available and what does it cost? A date picker and clear prices
Ask I have a question A WhatsApp button and a phone number
Book I want this room A short form or a booking engine with payment

The features that matter most

Real photos

Photos sell rooms. Show each room type from the door, the bed, the bathroom and the view. Add the entrance, the lobby, the breakfast area and the surroundings. Use bright, sharp images and compress them so the page loads fast. Never use pictures of a different property.

Clear room pages

Give each room type its own section. Say the bed size, the number of guests, the facilities and the price per night. Mention air conditioning, hot water, power backup and internet only if you provide them reliably. A guest who arrives and finds otherwise will leave a poor review.

A booking option that fits your size

You have three choices.

  1. Enquiry form. The guest sends dates and details, and you reply. It is simple and works for small properties.
  2. WhatsApp booking. The guest taps a button and sends a prefilled message with dates and room type. Many guests prefer a chat to a form.
  3. Online booking engine. The guest sees live availability and pays a deposit. It needs more setup, and it works best when you keep your calendar updated.

Start with the first two. Add a booking engine when the volume justifies it. Our guide to adding a WhatsApp button to your website shows how to set up prefilled messages.

Deposits and payments

A deposit protects you from no shows. Offer the payment methods your guests use. Local guests may prefer mobile money, and guests from abroad usually want a card. Explain the deposit amount and the refund rule before they pay.

Location and directions

Add a map, a landmark based description and travel tips. Say how far you are from the airport, bus station or main road, and how guests can reach you at night. Guests worry about finding a place. Remove the worry.

Reviews and trust

Add real guest comments, with permission, and link to your Google profile. Keep your Google Business Profile complete, since many guests see it before they see your website.

Policies in plain words

List check in and check out times, cancellation terms, child and pet rules and payment terms. Short, honest policies prevent arguments.

Speed and mobile design

Most guests will open your site on a phone, often on a mobile network. A site that loads slowly loses them. Use a simple layout, compress images and keep the booking button visible as the guest scrolls.

Get found on search

Write a page for each service, such as rooms, the restaurant, the conference room or airport pickup. Mention your town and neighbourhood in plain sentences. Keep your name, address and phone number the same everywhere online. Our SEO and digital marketing service helps hotels get found in local search.

Turn platform guests into direct guests

When a guest stays with you through a platform, treat them well and invite them to book direct next time. Put a card in the room with your website and WhatsApp number. Mention a small perk for direct bookings, such as late checkout or a free breakfast, if you can afford it. Keep the offer honest and easy to claim.

Collect contact details at check in, with permission. A short message a few weeks before the holiday season reminds past guests that you exist.

Common mistakes

  • Hiding prices and forcing guests to ask.
  • Using photos that do not match the real rooms.
  • Leaving a booking form that does not reach anyone.
  • Answering enquiries after a day. Guests book with whoever replies first.
  • Letting the calendar go out of date and accepting double bookings.

Launch checklist

  • Photos of every room type, taken in good light.
  • Prices and facilities listed for each room.
  • A WhatsApp button and a phone number on every page.
  • A booking form or engine that you tested with a real request.
  • Deposit and cancellation terms in plain words.
  • A map and travel directions.
  • Google profile linked and complete.
  • Pages that load quickly on a phone.
